I used a scrap piece of 1/2-inch plywood I had sitting in my shed to build it out. I’ve had outdoor storage on my property before where I skipped this step and ended up dealing with rats, squirrels, and raccoons helping themselves to whatever was inside. Not doing that again. In 100-degree heat, this stuff starts setting up fast — I’m talking hard in about 10 minutes and radiating heat within 20. I kept misting the counters every 15 minutes for the first couple of hours to slow the cure and reduce cracking.
